Introduction: The Five-star Movement from the street to local and national institutions
The special issue is the result of research and analysis concerning the activities of the Five-star Movement (M5s) in the local and national institutions and the process of institutionalisation undergone by this new political entity. Even though the M5s has resisted being transformed into a political party, it is having to face the problems associated with its relative institutionalisation: the selection of personnel; the coordination of activities; decision making. Like many other movements, the M5s has brought a new logic to the institutions and some innovative practices, but has been forced to adapt to the insider’s rules.

Digital movement parties: a comparative analysis of the technopolitical cultures and the participation platforms of the Movimento 5 Stelle and the Piratenpartei
The Pirate Party of Germany (PPG) and the Italian 5-Star Movement (5SM) are two digital movement parties that share several ideological features, including their roots in anti-establishment movements, their refusal to position themselves on the Left-Right spectrum, and their belief that the Internet increases the capacity of ordinary citizens for self-government and self-representation. To this end, both parties have adopted online participation platforms, which allow their members to contribute to the development of the party program, vote on strategic decisions, and propose policy initiatives. Given these affinities and given that both parties begun their political ascendancy in the same years, their antipodal political destinies – ascendency to power for the 5SM, downfall for the PPG – are all the more striking. This article accounts for this divergence by showing how the technopopulist orientation of both parties conceals in fact radically different conceptions of political participation and internal party democracy. To this end, it considers the role that different technopolitical cultures have played in shaping the organization of these two parties in their early stages, and how the subsequent adoption and use of online participation platforms has led to internal strife and bitter disputes within the PPG and increasing centralization within the 5SM.

O presente artigo pretende realizar uma análise inicial do papel desempenhado pelas plataformas digitais no enfrentamento ao Covid-19 em comunidades periféricas do Brasil em um contexto de disputa de narrativas e ausência de ações e diretrizes governamentais estratégicas e coordenadas, propondo repensar a ideia tradicional do social limitada apenas aos humanos. A partir de um mapeamento inicial, foram selecionados alguns exemplos para análise, direcionados pela metodologia da pesquisa atópica, que entende o pesquisador como parte da rede múltipla que estuda. As considerações apresentadas representam um primeiro
esforço de pesquisa sobre o tema, desenvolvido enquanto tal processo acontece e é vivenciado.
The Stack: Design and Geopolitics in the Age of Planetary-Scale Computing

From NSA surveillance to Jihadist social media and the Sino-Google Wars, computation has become more than a type of machine, it is a global infrastructure that is changing not only how governments govern, but what government even is in the first place.
We need to take a step back and see a big picture that is different from what was predicted. A new kind of political geography is emerging before our eyes.
We should view smart grids, cloud computing, mobile software and smart cities, universal addressing systems, ubiquitous computing and robotics not as unrelated genres of computation but as forming a larger and coherent whole. Together they constitute an accidental megastructure called The Stack.
This is not only a planetary-scale computing system, it is also a new architecture for how we divide up the world into sovereign spaces. The Nation-State isn't going away but it is evolving into a Cloud platform, and perhaps vice versa. This poses extraordinary challenges for design and geopolitics. By seeing the whole we stand a better chance of designing a system we will want to inhabit.
In this talk, we'll map The Stack we have and sketch The Stack-to-come.

A Cautious Prometheus? A Few Steps Toward a Philosophy of Design (with Special Attention to Peter Sloterdijk)
The very spread of the word "design" from daily objects to cities and ecosystems, is taken here as a symptom of an interesting switch in the theory of action that has been typical of modernism. The paper review five connotations of the verb “to design » and analyze them as an alternative to the notion of "construction" and "fabrication". It then presents the work of Peter Sloterdijk has a crucial contribution to the philosophy of design. It shows especially how Sloterdijk’ notion of explicitation allows to reconsider materiality (a materiality to which design has always been sensitive) but freed from naturalization as well as from the balancing act between form and function. Finally, it offers a challenge to the design theorists for inventing the tools that could allow this philosophy of design to “draw together » matters of concern.

The authors' vision for the future of embedded-system design involves two essential components: a rigorous methodology for embedded software development and platform-based design.
Este artigo contextualiza, define e operacionaliza o conceito de plataformização. A partir de insights vindos de diferentes perspectivas acadêmicas sobre plataformas – estudos de software, economia política crítica, estudos de negócios e estudos culturais – desenvolvemos uma abordagem compreensiva em relação a esse processo. A plataformização é definida como a penetração de infraestruturas, processos econômicos e estruturas governamentais das plataformas digitais em diferentes setores econômicos e esferas da vida. Ela também envolve a reorganização de práticas e imaginários culturais em torno dessas plataformas. A partir do exemplo de app stores, mostramos como essa definição pode ser empregada em pesquisas empíricas.
